Many people do not know what causes bad breath. Bad breath is a major problem that many people simply do not want to discuss. Because it is such a personal issue it often goes without being addressed. However, bad breath and the related health complications must be talked about in order to be resolved. While there are many breath freshening products on the market today, masking the problem does not fix what is actually causing it to happen. Perhaps one of the most obvious reasons for bad breath or halitosis is a lack of good oral hygiene. Regular brushing, flossing and tongue cleaning is probably the best way to reduce odor.

Another reason that an individual may have halitosis is something known as xerostomia or dry mouth. This happens when there is a lack of saliva in the mouth. The causes of this condition are likely due to certain types of medications as well as chemotherapy or simply systemic dehydration. In addition, there are different types of oral infections and periodontal diseases that can result in strong odor in the breath. As plaque accumulates on the teeth, food particles and a variety of bacteria can cause the breath to smell unpleasant. This is clearly why good oral hygiene is so incredibly important.

Finally, there are a variety of medical underlying conditions that can result in halitosis or strong odor coming from the mouth. Any time individuals struggle with serious medical conditions that affect healthy teeth and gums, it is best they check with their doctor and dental care provider in a collaboration. This is a smart way to get to the root of what is causing dental health and overall general health related problems. There are a variety of diseases that can result in bad breath including everything from diabetes complications to lung infections and even bronchitis. In some rare cases even liver complications can result in halitosis.
