Did you know the importance of flossing and that it is one of the very best things you can possibly do to keep your teeth healthy, strong and attractive? It’s true. Gum disease is a serious concern and flossing regularly can stop it from ever happening. Home dental hygiene practices including flossing, brushing and eating right can save a lot of trouble later on down the road. Keep in mind that even though you are brushing thoroughly that you are not completely cleaning your teeth if you are not flossing. Because a brush is flat and teeth have many tiny curves it is virtually impossible to clean completely with only a brush.

Flossing Can Save The Day

That said, bacteria typically hang out in tiny crevices and curves and around the teeth. Bacteria ultimately leads to plaque. Flossing can save the day in this regard. Plan to floss either in the morning when you first wake up or at night prior to going to bed. This will ensure that food particles, bacteria and other undesirable matter will be removed thoroughly. The actual process involves using approximately 18 inches of floss that can be wound between two fingers. Sliding the floss between teeth is best, then push the floss back and forth and create a curve or C-shaped around each tooth to help remove debris.

Key to Maintaining Long-Term Excellent Dental Health

Gently rub the floss along the gum line up and down from the top to the bottom of each tooth. Always remember to floss all teeth including teeth at the far back of the mouth. Conversely, some people choose a water pick or other water flossing devices. These are good too if they are used properly. As a final note, always remember that flossing is one of the keys to maintaining long-term excellent dental health. This combined with regular routine dental checkups and professional cleanings will ensure that your teeth look great well into the later years of life.
