How Long Does A Dental Crown Treatment Take

A crown is typically used to enhance the appearance of teeth and even to improve overall general dental health. A crown is nothing more than a tooth shaped cap that is placed directly over a tooth to return it to its original size, shape and intended function. There are different types of material that can be used to create a crown. This includes everything from porcelain fused to metal to ceramics and metal alloys as well as even composite resin and porcelain. The color of a crown is matched as closely as possible to mimic your natural teeth. When custom crafting and fulfilling the dental crown treatment, the shape, color and function of the tooth are all considered.

Preparing the Tooth

Crowns are used for a number of different reasons including everything from protecting a weak tooth from further decay to preventing breaks or cracks in an already weakened tooth. They are also used to cover teeth that are poorly shaped or discolored. This is usually done in a cosmetic capacity to improve one’s smile. Crowns can also be used to restore broken teeth or replace a cavity that is too large. They are also used in many cases to hold a dental bridge in place or to make other types of cosmetic modifications. The first step in having a dental crown fitted is preparing the tooth. This takes usually about 90 minutes and involves the dentist removing any decay and taking measurements to make sure that the crown will fit perfectly.

A Perfect Cosmetic Finished Appearance

Next the tooth is built up to provide additional support for the crown. After all this has been completed your dentist will place a temporary crown. This is to protect the tooth while a permanent dental crown is being made in the lab. In most cases the permanent crown will take about two weeks to be created. Once the new crown is available, you can expect to return to your dentist to have it fitted permanently. The dentist simply removes the temporary crown and cements the new permanent crown in place resulting in a perfect cosmetic finished appearance.
