Diet Effects on Oral Health

Diet Effects on Oral Health

There is little doubt about the importance of diet effects on oral health. A poor diet can have a direct impact on oral health and dental wellness. For example, sugar is one of the most damaging things to tooth enamel and is found in most modern diets. As a matter fact, sugar is known to be one of the main contributing factors associated with deteriorating or poor oral health. Food, drinks and the like all contain sugar that targets the teeth and ultimately sticks and clings to the outer surface of the tooth. This eventually leads to harmful plaque developing. Eventually plaque causes erosion of the tooth enamel with the end result being cavities. Even refined carbohydrates found in bread and similar foods can produce virtually the same negative effects.

Drinking Water After Eating Acidic Foods

Perhaps one of the best ways to establish better oral health and dental hygienist to simply eliminate sugary foods and foods that are acidic. The main reason for this is that acidic foods while in some ways healthy for your body can actually cause the enamel of the tooth to deteriorate over time. Everything from tomatoes to lemons and oranges, while again healthy for your body, can result in deterioration of the tooth enamel. Some have suggested that drinking water after eating acidic foods or brushing immediately following an acidic meal is a good remedy. Water is highly effective because it causes the production of saliva to increase thereby reducing acidity in the mouth. Perhaps one of the best ways to enjoy great dental health and beautiful looking teeth is to simply eat all foods and drink in moderation.

Teaching Children at a Very Early Age the Proper Aspects of Dental Hygiene

This is really the first step in achieving better oral health. Being proactive when it comes to your overall physical health as well as your dental health is indeed worth the time and effort. Also keep in mind that smoking cigarettes, cigars or other tobacco products such as chewing tobacco can have a very negative effect on dental wellness. Finally, teaching children at a very early age the proper aspects of dental hygiene is an excellent idea. When children learn early on how to take care of their teeth, they are more likely to continue these patterns well into adulthood. Even something as simple as children seeing parents brushing and flossing regularly can help imprint this type of good behavior.
