Dental Sealants – A Basic Overview

Dental sealants are being used more and more in today’s world of modern dentistry. That is simply due to the fact that dental sealants are an excellent way of protecting teeth in young and old alike. In essence, sealants are nothing more than a thin plastic coating that is used to protect the chewing surface of the teeth. Most notably this type of sealant is used on children’s back teeth to protect from cavities and tooth decay. Sealants are designed to protect the small pits and grooves located throughout the upper surface of young developing teeth. These rough and uneven areas are typically highly susceptible to cavities and tooth decay.

Sealants Are Easy To Apply

Germs and particles of food easily become stuck in the pits and groves and can be missed during a normal brushing routine. Sealants are designed to fill in these groves as a way to prevent food and germs from becoming lodged in these areas. Children typically will receive sealants on permanent back molars once they have emerged. Sealants are easy to apply where the procedure is performed in a dental office. Because the sealant material is liquid in nature it is simply painted on and hardens quickly to create a protective shield over the tooth.

Regular Checkups Twice A Year
Regular Checkups Twice A Year

Talk with your dental care provider to determine which type of gel dental sealant will be best for your child’s needs. This type of procedure aside, children should always get into the habit of brushing with a high quality toothbrush and toothpaste at least twice a day. In addition, parents should make sure that children are visiting their dental care provider for regular checkups twice a year. Children’s dental needs are unique and different than those of adults and that is why it is important for parents to stay attentive when it comes to a child’s dental health.
